Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid produced in the body from linoleic acid (LA), an essential fatty acid. Although a high ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids is thought to cause inflammation, supplementation with GLA has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects. One study found that GLA reduced inflammation significantly in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, and GLA has a long history of use for inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema. GLA has been demonstrated to improve post-viral fatigue syndrome, mastalgia and diabetic neuropathy, and also provides support during symptoms of PMS and menopause due to its hormone-balancing effects.
Although evening primrose oil is the most well-known source of GLA, AOR’s GLA-240 is sourced from organic borage oil, because borage contains 2-3 times more GLA than evening primrose oil. This means that each capsule is more cost effective, and fewer capsules need to be consumed in order to get the same amount of GLA.
GLA is most beneficial for those looking for a healthy, organic source of supplemental essential omega-6 fatty acids, those who experience symptoms of hormonal imbalance and those who suffer from inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and eczema.
